A memorial service honoring the life of Donald Edgar Schmaltz will be held in Virginia and shortly after he will be laid to rest by Navy Burial at Sea. Don passed at home on June 21, 2016 at the age of 78. His passions and values were evident in how he lived his life: he was devoted to his faith, his family and his friends. Don was faithful, loving, charismatic, generous, and ebullient. The depth of Don’s character was reflected in his heart for serving others and his many friends and colleagues from diverse walks of life.

Don was married to his wife Robin Lucille Schmaltz for 32 years. He is survived by 10 children: Dawn Wilkins-Webster (Tim), Dale Schmaltz (Mary) Daphne Austin (Steve), Dean Schmaltz (Denise), Dana Miller (Michael), Gretchen Bredemeier (Brian), Stephanie Goodrid Lawson (William), Nathan Schmaltz, Meagan Hellyer (Robert), and Hannah Schmaltz; 18 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Beverly Marston. His parents and sister Patricia Johnston preceded him death.

Don was born on October 3, 1937, to Edna Bryant Schmaltz and Nicholas Eugene Schmaltz. He grew up in the near north side of Indianapolis and attended Saint Catherine School and Cathedral High School. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier for four years.

Don worked in the mortgage banking industry in Indianapolis and the Washington, DC area for over 45 years. He received many awards and recognitions for his contributions to the mortgage banking industry during his distinguished career.

Don attended Grace Community Church for 23 years. He loved to swim, ski, fish travel and play with his children and grandchildren at the beach.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to World Vision www.wvi.org or He Knows Your Name Ministry www.heknowsyourname.org.
